The purposes of this Association are to:

  • A. Promote and protect the interests, rights, and welfare of the retired educators of the Stevens Point area in conjunction with the Wisconsin Retired Educators’ Association (WREA).
  • B. Monitor and work to improve the benefits for retired educators and other members of the Wisconsin Retirement System (WRS).
  • C. Encourage Association members to maintain membership in the Wisconsin Retired Educators’ Association (WREA).
  • D. Develop working relationships with local service organizations whose main emphasis is on aging groups and with organizations sharing goals similar to those of the Association.
  • E. Inform Association members about and advocate for educational and other relevant societal issues.
  • F. Inform members of activities in the area provided for senior citizens.
  • G. Encourage Association members to be active participants in community affairs on an individual basis.

2016 September Minutes


 STEVENS POINT AREA RETIRED TEACHERS ASSOCIATION 
On Monday, September 12, 2016 SPARTA met at the Sky Club with 31 present and one new member, Linda LeVasseur. Welcome Linda! Daryl Woods, Jordan Kaminski and Darlene Parkinson were guests. 
The door prize was won by Joyce Polzen. 
Three clip boards for volunteer opportunities at the WREA annual convention, booksale and SPARTA committees were distributed. 
Darlene Parkinson, our district III Co-President was introduced and shared important imformation. 
Joyce Chekouras presented Janeen Kwarciany with the AARP Youth Service Award. Thank you Janeen for all your time and hard work. 
Jordan Kaminski was acknowlegded for receiving the SPARTA student scholarship. 
OFFICERS' REPORTS: The secretary's minutes were accepted as printed. As of September, 2016, the treasurer reported a balance of $xxxx in the checkbook. 
The following changes will be made: Sunshine Committee Co Chairs; Mary Beth Anday in place of Rita Leary. Annual dues will be $12, not $15. 
COMMITTEE REPORTS: Legislative: Jack Allgaier has vacated the chair position and Jerry Kasdorf has agreed to co-chair. 
Sunshine: A get well/support card has been sent to Leigh Alligaier. 
Social: Eileen Payne shared that the Rawhide Ranch and Chain O'Lakes River Cruise was a success. There are more trips available 
through ADRC, Lincoln Center. 
OLD BUSINESS: The book committee reminded us that Wednesday, October 19th through Saturday, October 22nd until 2pm are the dates for the fall book sale. Set up for this sale is Monday, October 17th. Posters for this event are available for distribution. Books may be dropped off the 3rd Monday of the month. 
Remember to mark your preferences and hand in menu requests. 
NEW BUSINESS: Joyce Chekouras nominated Santha Bickford for the position of SPARTA president. David Blado seconded the nomination. A vote to accept was passed. 
A motion was made by Judy Zimmerman and seconded by Fran Vollrath to keep all other officers in their current positions for 2016-2017. 
The 2016-2017 budget was proposed by Jan Langton. A motion by Sally Dehlinger and a second by May Ann Kremms to accept was made. Motion passed. 
Santha Bickford presented Joyce Chekouras with a beautiful tote and coordinating computer and i-phone bag all made by our very own Jan Langton. THANK YOU JOYCE FOR ALL YOUR TIME AND DEDICATION TO SPARTA! 
Judy Zimmerman brought up having SPARTA shirts silk screened for members. More information forth coming. 
Try to remember to give credit to the Children's Museum when letting others know that SPARTA is able to again, begin giving grants. 
FORMAL PROGRAM: Daryl Woods from the Cap services Organization gave an informative "Family Crisis Center" presentation. Daryl requested his stipend be given to the Family Crisis Center. 

NEXT MEETING: On Monday, October 10th, 2016 at the Sky Club. The program will be "Arts Alliance of Portage County, Rejuvenating Downtown Stevens Point" presented by Greg Wright.
